CBM projects: The Novi Sad School of Journalism

The Novi Sad School of Journalism
is a non-government organization founded in 1996. It deals with education in the area of mass media and communication in a wider sense (non-violent communication, tolerance, political communication). The aim of our work is cherishing of a tolerant journalism in a multicultural, multiethnic and multilingual environment as Vojvodina and developing journalism which respects the values of truth, knowledge and criticism. Our activities focus on the problems of refugees in the region of Vojvodina, functioning of the multiparty system in a society in transition as Yugoslavia is, civil society, language strategies in communication and social action as well. By doing that we hope to provide our students with a knowledge that results in nondiscriminatory writing, i.e. writing without ethnicism, confesionalism and sexism. Equally important, we train young people who take part in the government and party progeny as well as the members of NGOs assigned for public relations and work with media. Students have on disposal the school library of some 200 books, science magazines, science work, etc.

Basic activity
of the Novi Sad School of Journalism is training of those who wish to become journalists, those who are at the beginning of their journalist carrier and further education as well as on the job training for active journalists. The course "Specialized Journalist Studies" lasts for a year and was supported so far by the Executive Board of the City of Novi Sad, some media and some private companies. The course consists of:

  • contemporary organized interactive lectures in the fields of theory of journalism, language strategy in communication, sociology and theory of politics with the accent on civil society and human rights
  • media, computer, language and communication workshops
  • forum-type workshops and panels on the current subjects

Lectures and workshops are held by eminent lecturers from the country and from abroad, journalists and publicists. After the theoretical part participants have practical work in some of the well-known media, with mentors assigned to follow their work. The School plans to expend the "Specialized Journalist Studies" course more on the work in electronic media, especially journalistic work on the Internet.
